'ANNABELLE: CREATION' OPENS AT $35M (08/14/2017)
New Line/Warner Bros.’ Annabelle: Creation opened this weekend at $35 million, blowing past its expected opening and breathing some life into the sagging summer box office.
Annabelle: Creation is the fourth film in The Conjuring series, and while it was the fourth-best opener, it was still considered respectable by industry observers.
Compared with last year, the summer domestic box office is off 11%, with $3.3 billion in receipts, Deadline reports.
The second wide-release debut this weekend was Open Road’s Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, which limped in with an $8.9 million start.
Lionsgate’s dark drama The Glass Castle, meanwhile, brought in a paltry $4.88 million in limited release. The film stars Brie Larson and is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Jeannette Walls.
In positive news, the Edgar Wright-helmed Baby Driver broke through the $100 million box office barrier. With a net production cost of $34 million, the film, starring Ansel Elgort, Lily Jamesand Kevin Spacey, is a breath of fresh air in a stale box office.
