Universal/Illumination’s The Secret Lives of Pets 2 and Fox/Disney’s Dark Phoenix opened at the box office below expectations and well behind the openings of the series originals.
Secret Lives came out on top of the lackluster box office with $47.1 million, behind the $104.3 million of the original and below the expectation of $50 million.
Dark Phoenix, meanwhile, starring Sophie Turner and Jennifer Lawrence, flopped with $33 million, 38% below the $53 million opening of the series original The Wolverine. The film was panned prior to arrival.
Aladdin, in its third week out, brought in $24 million, pushing its domestic total of $232 million.
