The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a fatal shooting victim. 40-year
old Matthew Scott Mason was shot at a residence off of FM 2626 just before midnight
Wednesday. Mason was shot in the shoulder. The bullet exited the should and entered his upper
body. He was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital where he died. The shooter is cooperating
with investigators. An arrest has not been made at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
