Country music and southern rock legend Charlie Daniels has passed, according to a statement from his publicist. Daniels was 83.
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member died Monday morning (July 6) at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee. Doctors determined the cause of death was a hemorrhagic stroke.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
Over the course of his career, Daniels issued Dove Award-winning Gospel albums, pioneering southern rock classics, and CMA Award-winning country hits. The Charlie Daniels Band had a string of hits including the signature “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Daniels’ accolades include his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Musicians Hall of Fame and being a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He was a strong supporter of the military and offered his time and talent to causes including The Journey Home Project, which he founded in 2014 with his manager David Corlew, to help veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
