Al's Morning Blog--August 1, 2022--Nightmare Driving

Nightmare on Elm street! Scary Movie! Even scarier...Nightmare on the Interstate. Like Interstate 10 or 45 or 59 or Eastex freeway. Your life is in your hands just avoiding other drivers. It's 85 MPH or better when allowable. Then there's the "Walls of death". Thats what we call them. Why does the highway department cordon off 15 miles when they can only work on one half a mile at the time? Yeah, I know. they get a better rate buying everything all at once. We've all heard it. So be it. But I'm betting you're not going to challenge a semi, bus, garbage truck or even a tricycle when you are in those close quarters. Count me out also. 60 years ago, you could drive from Dallas to Houston, going 60 miles an hour, stopping at every red light in every podunk town along the wayin just 4 hours. It still takes four (maybe 5) except the towns are no longer podunks. Towns that were 1500 folkswise are now 70 and 80 thousand folks deep. Every family has two cars, some three, four, even five. There's more concrete than ever before. Someon said of the new proposed I-45 expansion that will engulf the Houston area NEEDS LESS concrete. Harvey and Imelda proved we flood easier than before. There's no land left. Shopping centers, strip malls, new apartment complexes, more office space and less breathing room. Concrete build this nation and may well destroy it. But you cannot stop progress. We're building vehicles better to last longer. Don't need muffler shops because mufflers last forever. Don't need filling stations because we pump our own gas. We dont know if we're low on oil because we can't find the dipstick to check. Can't inflate our tires cuz we have to have it done at the dealership. Don't know how to back up a car because we got the little TV screen and the beep beep to tell us we're too close. So next time you pass a car stalled and the hood is up with the driver looking inside, have a good laugh. They don't know whats wrong or how to fix it. Just keep going and pray it doesn't happen to you. Oh, the little yellow light in your side vew mirror is telling you one of two things. Either someone's getting ready to pass you, or you just passed a radar trap and are in more trouble. Oh, and gas is still way too expensive. So is everything else. Hey, it's 2022!!
