'GEOSTORM' FAILS TO STORM BOX OFFICE WITH $13.3M OPENER, 'BOO 2' SCARES UP $21M+ (10/23/2017)
Disaster movie Geostorm had a three-year production cycle and a $120-$140M estimated budget, with only $13.3M to show at the box officer during opening weekend.
Warner Bros., Skydance Media and Jerry Bruckheimer Films did everything they could to turn what was previously an “unwatchable” film in an enjoyable feature, ordering $15M worth of reshoots last December, per Deadline.
But the Dean Devlin-helmed film wasn’t helped by recent real-life natural disasters which made it hit a little too close to home to be the pure fun it was intended to be.
Boo 2 managed to scare up some laughs at the box office, with a $21M opener. The film is Tyler Perry’s 10th to open at No. 1 and is Lionsgate’s fourth No. 1 weekend this year.
Boo 2 had broad appeal with a diverse audience: African Americans (38%), Caucasians (31%), Hispanics (21%) and Asian (4%) according to Screen Engine/ComScore’s PostTrak.
