WONDER WOMAN UNRAVELS 'THE MUMMY' AT THE BOX OFFICE (06/12/2017)
Wonder Woman cruised to its second straight week atop the U.S. box office chart, with the DC superhero film earning approximately $57.2 million over the weekend. The Gal Gadot-starring movie earned more than both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad did in their second weekends, when those male-heavy flicks raked in $51.3 million and #43.5 million respectively. Wonder Woman only fell 45 percent from its first weekend -- a very strong hold for a superhero entry -- and should end the weekend with $205 million at the North American box office so far.
Princess Diana put a chokehold on Princess Ahmanet, the title character of The Mummy. The Tom Cruise action-horror vehicle debuted this weekend and instantly flopped in North America, digging up only an approximate $32 million. Neither critics nor audiences seemed to like the film, which is meant to kick off a new "Dark Universe" shared universe of rebooted Universal Pictures monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein and the Invisible Man.
The Mummy did better at the international box office, bringing in around $141 million from over 60 territories, but it will have to depend heavily on foreign interest to break even, let alone turn a profit.
The box office Top Five was rounded out by Captain Underpants at Number Three, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in the fourth slot, and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 at Number Five.
