A Jasper man has been sentenced to 70 years in prison. The same jury that convicted 38-year
old Gary Rene Smith Jr. sentenced him yesterday. Smith was arrested in May of 2015 after
selling drugs during in undercover operation. This was his second trial in the case as his
trial in May ended in a mistrial when the jury could not reach a verdict. Smith is also facing
a deadly conduct charge for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of a Liberty County
man in August of 2013 in Jasper County.
