On Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at approximately 7:40 AM, the Vidor Police Department Dispatch Center received several calls in reference to a blue Dodge Pick-up truck driving wrecklessly Southbound on N. Main Street. The caller continued to give the location of the vehicle. An officer observed the vehicle go through the red light at Hwy 105 and Hwy 90. Officers were able to get behind the blue Dodge in the 600 block of S. Main at which time they activated their emergency lights. The Blue Dodge began to accelerate SB on S. Main Street reaching speeds of up to 85 MPH. The driver left the roadway just south of Old Spanish Trail on S. Main Street. The driver was unrestrained.
Upon making contact with the single occupant, officers realized it was a 10-year-old child. Officers began to give the child first aid and requested Acadian Ambulance Service and Orange County ESD #1 for extrication due to damage to the vehicle. The driver was extricated from the vehicle by Orange County ESD#1 and transported to a landing zone for Acadian Air One. The driver was transported to Hermann Memorial in Houston in serious condition.
While officers were out with the driver following the accident, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the child’s mother reporting that her vehicle was taken by her 10-year-old son. It appears the child was upset over a disciplinary issue and took the vehicle. This incident is under investigation.
