40-year old Jonathan Matthews Torres, the man accused of placing an explosive device near
the Stabucks on Dowlen Road in Beaumont and causing damage to St. Stephen’s Episcopal
Church with an explosive device, made his initial appearance in a Beaumont federal courtroom
yesterday. Torres faces five to 20 years in prison if he is convicted. He will have a second
hearing tomorrow afternoon. He is represented by court appointed attorney Ryan Gertz.
