The family of a Vidor man shot and killed by an off duty Beaumont police officer two years ago
has filed a lawsuit against the city of Beaumont and former officer Chase Welch. Welch
claimed self defense in the October 2016 shooting death of Chaz York. Welch and witnesses
say York was approaching the off duty officer with a baseball bat in the parking lot of
Madison’s restaurant. York was shot five times. Welch, who resigned from the Beaumont Police
Department was cleared by a Jefferson County grand jury in the shooting.
