An investigation is underway in the death of a Jasper inmate. Yesterday morning,
Steven Mitchell Qualls was found unresponsive in a detox cell at the city jail. Qualls, a Tyler
County resident, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication following his release from
the Jasper hospital, at which time he refused to leave the property. An autopsy has been
ordered. The Texas Rangers will be investigating the death of Qualls.
