The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man that hit a deputy sheriff
and fled the scene. The sheriff’s office says Scott Allen Gantt intentionally struck the deputy
that was directing traffic around a building that was on fire in Deweyville. Gantt fled the
scene and was arrested in Orange County following a brief standoff. He is facing multiple
charges. His bonds total more than $150,000. The deputy was treated and released for his
injuries.
