By a 4-3 vote, the BISD board of trustees voted against renaming the district’s football stadium
the Dr. Carroll A “Butch” Thomas Educational Support Center, which was the original name of
the stadium. The district named the stadium Memorial Stadium in 2018. Board member Stacey
Lewis Jr. made the motion to rename the stadium after the former superintendent. Board
President Robert Dunn and trustees Joe Evans, Denise Spooner, and Tillie Hickman voted
against the motion.
