Torres Withdraws Guilty Plea

Luis Torres, the man accused of killing Beaumont police officer Sheena Yarbrough-Powell, withdrew his guilty plea Monday morning during a sentencing hearing in Judge John Stevens courtroom. Judge Stevens set a trial date for July 18. Torres had pled guilty to Intoxication Manslaughter in the 2020 head-on-crash that killed Officer Yarbrough-Powell. In a plea deal with the District Attorney’s office the maximum time behind bars for Torres would have been 30 years. Without the plea agreement the Port Arhtur man now faces the possibility of up to life in prison if a jury convicts him of Intoxication Manslaughter since the death involved a police officer.
