Vernon Parish, LA) -- Fort Polk in Louisiana is no more. The Army post has been renamed for a Black war hero, William Henry Johnson. Sergeant Johnson was a North Carolina native, later of New York, who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions in France during World War One. Johnson killed four German soldiers and wounded a dozen more after being wounded more than 20 times. Fort Johnson was formerly named for Leonidas Polk, an Episcopalian bishop and Confederate general. The name change is the latest in the military's efforts to rename bases that honor Confederate leaders.
