A historic building in downtown Beaumont has been destroyed by fire. Firefighters responded to
the vacant Gilbert Building near Pearl and Bowie just past 7:00 last night. The fire started on the
south side of the building a quickly spread. The building has been vacant. Residents of an area
loft apartment were evacuated as a precaution. There were no injuries reported, however one
firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.
