'BLADE RUNNER 2049' DISAPPOINTS WITH $31M DEBUT (10/09/2017)

Alcon Entertainment/Sony’s Blade Runner 2049 via Warner Bros. opened with a disappointing thud at $31.3 million in 4,058 theaters. Estimates for the opening hovered around $45 million Friday and spiraled down from there.

Observers write that the studio and producers were too dependent on the great critical acclaim that the first iteration of the Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford vehicle accrued, but overlooked the fact that there was low wattage for the brand among the masses.

Observers also point to the R-Rating and slower pace of the film as being problematic in hooking the under-25 crowd.

20th Century Fox/Chernin’s The Mountain Between Us is coming in at second place with $10.1 million. New Line/Warner Bros.’ It is coming in at third at $9.59 million.

There is some really good box office news. September hit an all-time domestic box office record with $708 million in receipts, thanks to It and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
