'JIGSAW' AND 'SUBURBICON' DISAPPOINT AT B.O. WITH PALTRY OPENINGS (10/30/2017)
The pre-Halloween weekend was a box office horror show, bringing in just $75 million in total ticket sales, the second-lowest weekend this year to date. (The worst weekend happened in August with just $69.3 million).
Overall, the box office was off 15% from a year ago. While horror at this time of the year is usually a good bet, Lionsgate’s Jigsaw brought in just $16.25 million, the lowest ever for a movie in the Saw franchise.
Meanwhile, DreamWorks/Universal’s Thank You for Your Service and Paramount/Black Bear’s Suburbicon brought in just $3.7 million and $2.8 million each.
The George Clooney-directed Matt Damon-starring Suburbicon was slapped with a D- CinemaScore, which is thought to have doomed whatever chance the artsy period flick had at the box office in the first place.
