'PACIFIC RIM' OUSTS 'BLACK PANTHER' FROM TOP SPOT (03/26/2018)
A squad of robots were finally able to unseat Black Panther from the box office. Universal Pictures’ Pacific Rim Uprising nabbed the top spot, bringing in $28 million over the weekend.
Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther sat on top for five weeks. Directed by Steven S. DeKnight and produced by original Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro, Uprising stars John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, a pilot out to save the planet from giant interdimensional beasts known as kaiju.
Uprising cost $150 million to make, got slammed by critics and earned a B from CinemaScore.
Black Panther earned $16.7 million, bringing its global take to nearly $1.24 billion, making it the highest-grossing superhero movie ever.
Also new this week is Sherlock Gnomes, which brought in $10.6 million, Sony’s biblical drama Paul, Apostle of Christ, which nabbed $5 million and Open Road’s teen love story Midnight Sun, which landed about $5 million in receipts.
