14-Year Old Texan Wins National Spelling Bee

Fourteen-year-old Karthik Nemmani of McKinney, Texas, won the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee last night (May 31st), earning the title and the $40,000, trophy, encyclopedias and $2,500 savings bond that comes with it. The eighth-grader was crowned champion after correctly spelling the word "koinonia" [koy-nuh-NEE-uh], which is defined as an "intimate spiritual communion and participative sharing in a common religious commitment and spiritual community."
