'THE GRINCH' STEALS BOX OFFICE WITH $66M OPENER (11/12/2018)
Illumination and Universal’s The Grinch had a stellar $66 million opener over the weekend. This is the second big-screen adaptation of the classic holiday tale following Ron Howard’s effort in 2000. Benedict Cumberbatch voiced The Grinch.
Sony’s The Girl in the Spider Web, starring Claire Foy, meanwhile, opened to a surprisingly disappointing $8 million. The Girl tied for fifth place at the box office with A Star Is Born, in its sixth weekend out.
Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody snagged second place, nabbing $30.9 million for its second weekend out, crossing the $100 million mark in the domestic box office with these receipts.
J.J. Abrams’ WWII zombie flick Overlord placed third for its opening weekend with $10.1 million, also a disappointment.
