Having a good cry might actually be good for you. Australian researchers found people who watched a sad video and sobbed were able to maintain a constant breathing rate during an endurance test that followed, while people who didn't cry while watching a video had more erratic breathing during the test. Also the people who cried experienced a slowing heart rate before they cried, and then their heart rate gradually returned to normal as they composed themselves. The scientists believe crying may help people "self soothe," as well as help them to "regulate their heart rate." They also theorize that crying might cause different bodily responses in "real world settings," such as if someone is mourning a death or the break up of a relationship.
