The real reason? Supermarkets want to save money. Fewer clerks, less money. You do it yourself. Just like at the gas pump or the Laundromat. We brought this on ourselves with the advent of “people less” stores. You have heard of paperless. Welcome to people less. That just knocked someone out of a job. Fewer jobs, less money. More money for the owners. We asked for this. We’re in a hurry. We can’t wait. And you do a better job than the checker, right? No service, no smile, no thank you. Get it and go. When you don’t object and shop somewhere else maybe you have a dog in the hunt. If you don’t complain, they win. There are still a few shops that employ people. Guess what? They usually charge more. There you go. Save a dime, help commit a crime. The crime of humans helping you to help yourself.
