I have always considered eating out a pleasure, a special occasion. It could be a client lunch, a date with a newbie, your spouse or just lunch, or dinner, or whatever. I always consider the wait staff as special. They take your order, bring your food and upon receipt of the check and usual deservedly so, receive one. Notoriously bad tippers are people with little education, tightwads. girls day out, celebrating someone pregnant, going on leave or retirement or those who eat at BK< Wings are us, or others. Sorry, but that's the way it is. Here are some of the excuses. "I'm not made of money," they're doing ok", "I'm a little short this week" or a host of other excuses. I know. My daughter was a waitress, so were both of my grandsons, (well 2 out of 3) and I hear it all. They all agree. Crappy service, by and large are reasons from one to ten. Yesterday I ate with a client. We ordered a salad, entree, drink and of course, water. I specifically asked for water with no ice. I said it twice. Comes the water......with ice. No matter. I ordered the entree, as did my companions. Salad....entree. Really simple. My wife and I always request "Don't bring entree until we are finished with our salad". Simple??? NO. salad arrives one minute later with the waiter trying to figure out where the entree will fit, thanks to bread basket, drinks, silverware, napkins, salad and of course, our hands which we usually use to put salad, bread and now of course entree in our pie hole, which by now will not fit . We smile and move along, but not before the waiter is back, asking if everything tastes good. My God, we haven't had a chance to taste, let alone critique. But being kind, we nod with mouth's full of entree , salad and bread, all stuffed into our astonished mouths. But wait, there's more. Measuring the iced tea glass, which at this moment is filled to the brim, waiter person tries to force more liquid into the glass, again asking if all is ok. I couldn't wait to get the check and leave. The coup de gras was when the waiter stood guard over the check, watching to see the tip amount. Is there a school for these type waiters? Or perhaps, a firing squad???
